My sister and I have been driving our grandmother's car from the Bay Area to Seattle. (She moved, she didn't want to do the drive herself.)

First day was Saturday, a straight shot up I-5 from Walnut Creek to the Oregon border. There's not much to be said about this; it's pretty dull until you hit the mountains at the north end of the Central Valley. There's then some spectacle in and around Shasta Lake, but we were a bit tired to appreciate it. We got to Ashland at about seven PM, where we were staying with one of my sister's friends from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. We had dinner with her and then hopped up to the Britt Festival where the Martha Graham Dance Company was performing. Martha Graham can be said to have invented modern dance, and the company is definitely worth seeing if you get the chance. I do not have the vocabulary to describe the experience.

On Sunday we drove from Ashland to Crater Lake which is ... just wow. You don't see water that blue, like, ever. And it's surrounded by miles and miles of mindblowing forest scenery. I cannot presently show you the photos as I have lost access to my Flickr account, bleah. If you're going up there, you should definitely make the side trip to the Pinnacles just for the sheer bizarre factor. We did a short hike halfway up one of the mountain trails before deciding that the air was too thin to continue. We spent the night in Chemult (population 75, according to the nice man in the roadside bar where we had dinner).

On Monday we got back on the road; from Chemult through Eugene to Portland. This was uneventful. The drive on OR-58 from Chemult to Eugene is pretty darn spectacular in itself, but as I was doing the driving I have no photos. We are staying in Portland with another of Dara's friends from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the choreographer for this year's production of Romeo and Juliet. We went to dinner and then to karaoke night at Dante's — unlike other karaoke, they have a live band, which makes it both a lot more fun and a lot more frightening. Dara and her friends rocked. I was persuaded to sing Punk Rock Girl and did not make a complete fool of myself. After that we sat up and watched the total eclipse of the moon, and then fell into bed at about four AM.

Today we are going to hang around in Portland and take it easy.
