finding a copy of the 1964 Joy of Cooking in a used bookstore in Encinitas for $6.50. also the nigh-unfindable Cats Have No Lord for two fifty.

plotting to grow basil and sage and thyme and rosemary on one's patio.

I was annoyed over that pair of books. I have since forgiven Mr. Shetterly, but I was still not pleased. I realized that the reasoning might be spoilerific, though, so if you don't know what pair I mean, I will wait until you do to gripe in your presence.

You mean you don't find that sudden change of style at the end of Joy of Cooking, the bit after the condiments where it suddenly changes to an alphabetical listing, to be irritating? It's not nearly as good reading after that. ;)
