I need a new printer. It needs to have the following properties:

  1. My computer is one of those spiffy Shuttle miniboxes and does not have a parallel port; USB, FireWire, or WiFi connectivity are necessary.
  2. Must work, out of the box, with no grief whatsoever, with Linux (specifically, Debian, unstable, CUPS)
  3. Must cost less than $200.
  4. Per-page cost of supplies must be as low as possible. If I have to buy a $50 ink cartridge every month it's no good. I expect to be printing about 50 pages a week.
  5. Should not consume mass quantities of electricity if left on all the time. I may have killed my old printer by turning it off whenever it wasn't in use.
  6. Color would be nice but is not required.
  7. Double-sided printing would also be nice; failing that, reliable operation when one prints every other page, flips the printout over, and sticks it back in to print the remainder.
  8. Paper feed should never, under any circumstances, grab more than one page at a time.

Suggestions?

My printer reqs are sufficiently different that I can't speak to most of your points, but I can say finding a printer that meets 3 and doesn't meet one is downright difficult these days; every consumer-level printer I've seen in the past few years has been USB.

7a and 8 will be tricky, I suspect.

We, uh, sell printers, and stuff. What was your old printer?

A Lexmark Optra E310 laser printer, which has been a nuisance in one way or another since I got it - misfeeding, needing its fuser replaced, needing its high-voltage board replaced, yada yada. Its newest failure to cooperate consists in not reporting its presence on the USB when turned on; I suspect the cure for this is a new logic board, but at this point I'm sick of throwing away money on it. It does, however, contain a brand new toner cartridge which is probably worth $100 (or that's how much I remember Office Depot charging me for it anyway). If your shop wanted to take the thing off my hands (or just the toner cartridge) in exchange or partial exchange for something less troublesome, I would be amenable, though the logistics might be a headache as I no longer have the box it came in.

Er, Zwol? Don't buy a new printer, yet. We have one which fulfills the requirements (especially reliability) and which you really won't get cheaper anywhere else. Trust me on this one...
