my computer has started making soft, high-pitched squeaking noises whenever the CPU is active.

Heh heh. I'd love to see someone cram a gerbil inside this thing (it's one of those Shuttle brand mini-PCs).

CPU fan past its prime?

Heat sink detach from the CPU and that's the sound of the silicon cracking?

It doesn't sound like a fan noise ... more like the chirping noises that Power Mac G4s are notorious for. Could be the heat sink's come loose but I doubt it, the computer isn't showing any other symptoms.
