If you put David Brin on a panel, you better have an iron-fisted moderator, or no one else will get a word in edgewise.

So he talks like he writes?

He does tend to be a bit preachy and go on at great length in his writing, too, come to think of it. Particularly the nonfiction. I'm told that he has basically one pet rant which he brings out at every opportunity.

However, in the context of a con panel, the problem is not that he has one pet rant; it's that the moderator needs to shut him down whenever he starts in on it so that OTHER PEOPLE GET TO TALK. (I suppose he could be allowed to do it once per panel, provided it was vaguely on topic, which it won't always be.)

Insufficiently iron-fisted moderators should see me; I have a copy of the one item known to silence him (http://minref.freeyellow.com/stories.htm). Mention of said book has been effective in the past as well, but may be harder to do in a panel context, particularly if he's already entered full-blown rant mode.

I'm curious; how does that help, given that he's in that collection?

I'm not sure what the mechanism is. He won't talk about the book. At all. Stopped talking altogether when I handed it to him at a signing, though he did sign it.
