Only a small exaggeration. About 5000-5500 acres so far; 3000 near Ramona and 2500 near Potrero. With the Santa Ana winds to push, they're spreading like, well, wildfire. I'm hoping they get them under conrol quickly.
I'm seeing heavy smoke reports from all over the county. During the 2003 fiires, I lived in Clairemont, and the smoke was bad enough to make going outside a health hazard. My office in Mira Mesa closed for two days because of the smoke.
I only heard about it because my mother contacted me asking what they should take, should they be evacuated. They're in Tierrasanta, and the fires got rather close to the house in 2003.
...yes, was closed (past), not is closed (present). I haven't heard anything relating to it now, though if it were to be closed, there would be an all-at-ucsd e-mail going out about it.
We're getting part of the plume from the Ramona fire right now. Nasty stuff. The smoke is thick and sudden enough that we thought the fires were much closer. Of course, there might be other, smaller fires nearby that we haven't heard about yet.
