zwol: (commedia dell' arte)
[personal profile] zwol

since half of my friends list seems to be doing it:

  • Post 3 things you've done in your lifetime that you don't think anybody else on your friends list has done.
  • See if anybody else responds with "I've done that." If they have, you need to add another!(2.b., 2.c., etc...)
  • Have your friends cut & paste this into their journal to see what unique things they've done in their life.

I have:

1) Used the phrase "If you are caught I will disavow all knowledge of your actions" in earnest. ([livejournal.com profile] vvvexation)
1a) Stored stolen property in plain sight in a semi-public space for months. ([livejournal.com profile] queenpam)
1b) Serenaded the grave of Alexander Hamilton.

2) Said good things about GNU Autoconf. In public. ([livejournal.com profile] elsmi, [livejournal.com profile] echristo)
2a) Written and deployed spyware. (In a virtuous cause, but I'll count black-hat uses too.)

3) Traveled more than three thousand miles to attend a theatrical performance. ([livejournal.com profile] elsmi, [livejournal.com profile] shweta_narayan, [livejournal.com profile] kaolinfire, [livejournal.com profile] papersky)
3a) Visited France, but not Paris.

[EDIT: Man. I lose.] [EDIT AT 11: College shenanigans not a good source of material.]

You have too many free software people on your friends list to get away with #2 :)

So you're copping to it, eh?

Yeah, I've even done a couple of public presentations on how to use autoconf better...

Are there transcripts/slides of any of those? Moz could use a kick in the pants along the lines of "yes, there ARE real benefits to moving to 2.5x" :-/

I'll send you my slides, but unfortunately they're more of a "yes this thing exists and is cool" rather than "hey, you should update to a newer version"

But hey, if it helps that'd be great.

If an Indian wedding counts as a theatrical performance I've done #3 ;D

... probably has to, yeah.

There's some temptation to combine #1 and #2 and disavow ever saying nice things about Autoconf, but... I admit it, I have.

I might cancel #3 too, it's borderline: flew from CA to NY for a weekend to see shows. That's ~2900 miles by road, less by air on a direct flight, but we probably didn't have a direct flight, I don't remember :-).

Oh yah, we did that, didn't we. It wasn't a direct flight.
You guys got me to eat a bite of hot dog in the airport somewhere on account of it not being food and thus not meat.

Rent. Don't remember another show, but don't remember a lot.

Ah yes. I remember when you-all did that.

I have vague recollections of having done #1, though not in those exact words.

Technicalities count, I suppose. Can you share context?

From: [identity profile] vvvexation.livejournal.com
Unfortunately my recollections are vaguer than that. And now that I think about it, they're also too vague for me to recall exactly how earnestly I ever meant it, given that I'm no good at denying knowledge of things.

I think I have done 3. I've timed my coming home from Britain for the New Classical Theatre Festival -- I mean I'd have stayed there longer if it wouldn't have meant missing a theatrical performance here. I think that counts. I've even done it twice.

From: [identity profile] zwol.livejournal.com
Yeah, that counts. I was thinking of a trip where I flew from San Francisco to Germany specifically to see a show my sister directed, but come to that, I've also timed the end of a trip to Britain to catch a show in the states. (A rock concert, though, not a theater thing.)

You found a situation which actually merited the phrase? I'm impressed! I don't imagine you can share the story...?

Yeah, it's been long enough, and the context is pretty silly anyway. I was the travel manager for the Columbia Marching Band, and on an overnight road trip to Cornell I was informed that four of the people who were going to be on the bus would not be needing hotel rooms, they would continue on ahead and carry out a prank against the Cornell band (it helps to understand that the Cornell band is the only "serious" marching band in the Ivies, and as the group most dedicated to the cause of, er, being a comedy troupe first and a band second, CUMB hates their guts). I don't remember what the actual prank was, anymore; it didn't come off very well. But in my official capacity I wasn't supposed to cooperate with that sort of thing.

Ah, I see! Yeah, that's definitely legit. (And I'm surprised anyone on your flist had done it - bad luck!)

I feel like I ought to be able to say #2a (in a virtuous or more likely just silly + harmless cause), but I've got nothing. Nice :)

Losing sucks. So far I've lost on "made a popular add-on for a DOOR game." How random is that? :) The worst part is trying to remember if I'd know that at some point because it seems like it would have come up given other context I remember...

I think losing is fun here. You learn that you share weird things with your friends that way :)

Anyway, I can't peg zwol on any of the new ones.

I've done 1a. We had a stolen Keep Right sign in our apartment visible from outside the apartment (and our living room was nearly public anyway, people came and went at will) for most of my sophomore year.

That's remarkably similar to my situation (football goal post segments, science club lounge, most of sophomore year)...

Darn, now I have to think of something else.
