zwol: (burn zombies burn)
I'm writing this from a Starbucks next door to an auto mechanic in Rancho Bernardo, both of which, by the grace of God, are still open. It hasn't got here yet. The virus came out of the ocean, they're saying, and it doesn't spread that fast. Get inland.

I'm going to miss that ocean.

[livejournal.com profile] queenpam is with me, and as soon as the car is checked out for the long haul, we're heading for Utah. The Mormons have their act together and they're taking in refugees. I'm not going to be specific about routes. Back roads, mostly. They say the 15 is still open, but they also say Long Beach is burning. I don't want to get caught in a quarantine, assuming there still is a National Guard to enforce one. And I'm not going anywhere near Las Vegas.

Is it weird I'm glad this happened after I gave my qualifying presentation? It's meaningless now.

It looks like the Mormons didn't have their act together enough. Cedar City and Provo have succumbed to the zombies, and there's been no word from Salt Lake since three PM.

I am posting this via satellite phone from an undisclosed location east of the Mojave and south of the Grand Canyon. Barstow's deserted; we took what we needed and moved on. Needles and Kingman are still okay, but they point guns at you if you try to get out of your car. The new plan is to head for Tuba City, hoping that the Navajo Nation is more on the ball than the Mormons were. And with luck, Melvin will be there.

the fonts you get from the combination
\usepackage[osf]{mathpazo}
\usepackage{euler}
\renewcommand\ttdefault{pxtt}
do not suck. It would be nice if the euler package would be fixed to not cause latex to complain about changing font encodings, but I'll take that over sucky fonts.
